Birds of Big Bear Valley
Big Bear Valley is in the San Bernardino Mountains of Southern California. The valley is made up of the communities of Big Bear Lake, Big Bear City, Fawnskin, Erwin Lake, Baldwin Lake, and Sugarloaf.
Many of our visitors and residents came to our unique mountain valley for the wildlife and natural beauty provided by “Mother Nature”. In Big Bear Valley, we have approximately 250 species of birds, and enjoy the established migratory corridor the bird population historically travels. Southern California is a magnet for birders as a supreme destination. Few regions in North America offer such biological and topographic diversity. Exciting and challenging sightings of birds continue to make bird watching a hobby to be appreciated by novice to the accomplished.
The great hobby in the US involves people and families of all ages, in a non-invasive observance of wildlife and wild birds. Through education we can all become more aware of our place in caring for and enjoying birds in our valley.
In the high western mountains of North America, many characteristic bird species remain as year round residents. In Big Bear Valley, a characteristic bird list includes many residential birds, meaning they stay year round.
